CD Projekt RED is preparing to bring Geralt of Rivia back for another adventure. The upcoming The Witcher 3 expansion, titled Songs of the Past, will launch in 2027. It will introduce a new region, fresh quests, new weapons and a story filled with difficult choices.
The studio officially announced the expansion in May 2026. It later showcased the first gameplay footage during Gamescom Opening Night Live in August. The project is being developed jointly by CD Projekt RED and Fool’s Theory.
The Witcher 3 expansion introduces a new region
Songs of the Past will take players to Letten, a previously unexplored region in The Witcher universe. The area appears peaceful, with strong rural traditions and a distinctive local culture. However, a dark secret lies beneath its idyllic surroundings.
Players will once again control Geralt of Rivia. The new adventure will feature unfamiliar enemies, returning characters and difficult decisions with meaningful consequences.
CD Projekt RED has also confirmed new abilities and a weapon called the chain. These additions will bring fresh combat options to the familiar monster-hunting experience.
New quests and gameplay await Geralt
The upcoming The Witcher 3 expansion aims to deliver a full new story chapter rather than a small content update.
According to the official announcement, players can expect dozens of new quests, additional points of interest and several hours of new content.
The expansion also revisits the series’ focus on player decisions. Choices will influence the adventure, while encounters with new characters and enemies will shape Geralt’s journey through Letten.
Release date and supported platforms
CD Projekt RED has confirmed a 2027 release window for Songs of the Past. However, the studio has not announced an exact launch date.
The expansion will arrive as paid content for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
Fool’s Theory is co-developing the project alongside CD Projekt RED. The studio includes developers with experience working on The Witcher 3, bringing familiarity with the franchise to the new adventure.
The Witcher franchise prepares for another chapter
The new expansion extends the life of a game that originally launched in 2015. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold more than 65 million copies worldwide, according to CD Projekt RED.
The studio is also developing The Witcher 4, which will move the franchise into another chapter. CD Projekt RED has identified 2028 as the planned release window for the next mainline game.
With Songs of the Past arriving in 2027, players will have another opportunity to explore the franchise before its next major instalment.
For now, Geralt’s return to Letten remains one of the major upcoming releases for fans of open-world role-playing games.
