The Emmy Awards will leave their rotating broadcast-network home for Prime Video in September 2027, but viewers won’t need a paid subscription to watch.

“Now Prime Video audiences in more than 200 countries will be able to experience the Emmys live with no subscription required,” Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, said in the Oct. 6 announcement.

The Television Academy and Amazon agreed to a six-year deal that makes Prime Video the ceremony’s exclusive global home. The agreement begins with the 2027 show, which will continue to air live in September; the announcement does not give an exact date or start time.

For families keeping an eye on their streaming bills, the distinction matters: changing platforms does not mean adding another subscription. Amazon’s announcement said the awards will stream live and free in more than 240 countries and territories, with no subscription required.

The move ends the Academy’s rotation among ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, an arrangement that concluded with the 2026 telecast. Instead of handing the ceremony to a different network each year, the Academy will work with one partner across multiple awards seasons.

That changes a television tradition with deep roots. The Academy’s history dates the first Emmy Awards to Jan. 25, 1949, at the Hollywood Athletic Club, when the honors recognized local Los Angeles programming rather than the national field viewers know today.

The switch is still a year away. NBC carried the 78th Emmy Awards from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE, with Peacock also streaming the show live and on demand.

The announcement concerns the main Emmy ceremony’s new home; viewers should not assume every Emmy-branded event will move with it. The Academy’s 2026 viewing guide listed a separate Creative Arts broadcast on FXX and next-day streaming on Hulu, illustrating why each event’s viewing instructions matter.

“Streaming the Emmys free on Prime Video is another way we’re delivering the best in entertainment to our customers worldwide, and we look forward to collaborating with the Television Academy on this iconic event,” Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said of the partnership in the release.

Amazon’s plans go beyond a single night of trophies. The partners say Prime Video will use its services to support the Academy’s mission throughout the year and create new ways for fans to discover and engage with television, although they do not spell out those experiences.

Parents can treat the free stream as a viewing option, not a family-friendly seal of approval. A platform change says nothing about the suitability of nominated programs, clips or live remarks, and an Emmy nomination does not replace checking an individual show’s content.

Before next September, households can watch for the official date and access instructions, then decide whether the ceremony fits their evening. For now, the confirmed change is the destination — not a new subscription bill for watching the live awards. without changing anything make this news a better readability
