Apple is reportedly reducing production of the standard iPhone 17 for India after a significant price increase weakened demand, according to a report by The Economic Times. The move highlights the pressure higher smartphone prices are putting on Indian consumers, even as demand for premium iPhone models remains strong.
The iPhone 17’s 256GB variant now costs ₹99,900 in India, up from its launch price of ₹82,900. The ₹17,000 increase followed Apple’s September 2026 price revisions across several existing iPhone models.
Why iPhone 17 demand is weakening
The higher price appears to have made the standard iPhone 17 less attractive to price-conscious buyers. Consumers who traditionally waited for older iPhone models to become cheaper after a new launch are now facing a different situation, with prices moving in the opposite direction.
According to The Economic Times, Apple plans to redirect some India-bound production capacity towards exports, where demand for the standard iPhone 17 remains strong. The reported adjustment is expected to have only a marginal impact on the company’s overall production.
Pro models remain popular
While demand for the standard iPhone 17 has weakened in India, the premium segment is showing greater resilience. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models continue to attract buyers, according to the report.
The shift suggests that Apple’s pricing strategy and the growing price gap between standard and premium models could influence purchasing decisions in India. Some buyers may also consider older-generation or refurbished iPhones instead of paying more for the standard iPhone 17.
What this means for Indian buyers
The reported production adjustment highlights a challenge for Apple as it expands its presence in India’s smartphone market. Higher component costs and currency pressures have contributed to price increases across its product lineup.
For consumers, the higher price of the standard iPhone 17 could make purchase timing and model selection more important. Buyers may compare the standard model with discounted older iPhones and premium variants before deciding which device offers better value.
Apple’s reported production changes do not necessarily indicate a broader decline in global demand for the iPhone 17. According to the report, demand outside India remains strong, allowing Apple to redirect production towards overseas markets.
