Netflix has appointed former Disney executive Peter Rice as its new chief content officer, replacing Bela Bajaria, who is leaving the streaming company after nearly a decade.

The appointment, announced on October 15, will take effect on October 26. Rice will lead Netflix’s global content organisation, overseeing films, scripted and unscripted series, live events and other programming across its international markets.

The move marks a major leadership change as Netflix continues to evolve its content strategy amid intensifying competition in the streaming industry.

Peter Rice brings Disney and Fox experience
Rice brings extensive experience in television and film. He previously served as chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of general entertainment at The Walt Disney Company.

During his career, he worked across major entertainment brands and productions, including FX Networks, ABC and 20th Century Fox. His experience spans television programming, film production and relationships with creative talent.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos praised Rice’s business acumen, industry relationships and experience across television and film, saying his background would help the company continue delivering content to its global audience.

Bela Bajaria leaves after nearly a decade
Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 and became chief content officer in January 2023. During her tenure, Netflix expanded its programming across international markets and strengthened its offerings in unscripted entertainment, live events and sports.

Sarandos thanked Bajaria for her leadership and contributions to the company’s global content strategy.

Her departure comes during a period of organisational change at Netflix. The company recently announced plans to cut approximately 1,000 jobs, adding to the uncertainty surrounding its next phase of growth.

What the appointment means for Netflix
Rice’s appointment puts an experienced television and film executive in charge of Netflix’s global content operations. His priorities will include overseeing a diverse programming slate and helping the company maintain audience interest in an increasingly competitive entertainment market.

Streaming platforms face growing competition for viewers’ time from traditional broadcasters, rival services and digital platforms such as YouTube.
Rice’s leadership could influence how Netflix balances original films, returning series, live programming and other formats. However, the company has not announced specific changes to its content strategy following his appointment.

The transition will take effect on October 26, 2026, marking the start of a new chapter for Netflix’s content leadership.
